In the last few years, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have both started to feature more prominently in technology. That is especially the case in video editing, where artificial intelligence is being integrated with more and more ways.
Not long from now, AI may completely transform video editing – and in some ways, it already is starting to do just that just like what some companies that has a blender render farm.
Automatically Curating Video Footage
One of the earliest examples of AI’s use in video editing was as far back as 2016 when IBM used their Watson supercomputer to curate footage and create a trailer for the horror film Morgan. Essentially Watson used machine learning to analyze other trailers and then applied what it learned to curate and select scenes from the film that it felt would be good for the trailer.
That demonstration showcased the potential impact that AI could have in curating video footage. Normally it would take a human editor hours or even days and weeks to watch and curate all the video footage, while an AI could do the same in a fraction of the time based on specific parameters. The human editor could then focus on using the AI-curated clips to create the final video.
From that point, AI has been used more frequently to aid in video curation. In some cases, it even functions entirely on its own, such as in Google Clips where the AI identifies short and interesting clips to record independently, and gradually learns and improves its selection based on how the user responds to the clips that it creates.
Nowadays several editors include tools of their own to automate or assist with video curation. For example Movavi Video Editor has one in the form of the Montage Wizard.
More Intelligent and Automated Editing Tools
Video curation is not the only area of editing that can benefit from the automation that AI can provide, and there are numerous other tools that stand to utilize AI in a similar fashion.
The fact that AI can ‘interpret’ videos will allow them to play a role in practically any class of editing tool from colour correction to object removal, visual effects, image stabilization, and much more. Right now many of the tools in such roles use complex algorithms to attempt to analyze videos, which AI could eventually end up replacing.
Already several platforms are starting to include more intelligent editing tools that are AI-assisted, such as Adobe’s Sensei platform. Other editors are also starting to integrate AI solutions of their own.
In the near future, it is expected that more and more intelligent editing tools will start to surface that leverage AI to interpret and make recommendations for video editing. With such tools, video editing should be much easier for beginners, and more experienced users will be able to cut down their workload considerably by letting the AI handle most of the grunt work.
Are We Heading Towards Fully Automated Video Editors?
As you may have noticed although AI is transforming video editing – all of its advancements are as a tool to assist and facilitate a human editor. Automatic video editing does not follow your desires, the theme of your video clips, while a video editing service edits footage according to your requirements. The fact of the matter is that while AI could possibly edit videos fully automatically it is still a long way off from being to do that effectively.
For now, it is best to think of AI as a helpful tool that can simplify video editing and reduce the time that it takes to edit videos. That being said considering AI and ML are both in their infancy, there is no telling what they might eventually evolve into.
